Diversity for the Future

ASLA-NCC is a proud supporter of ‘Envision Tomorrow: An Education and Professional Development Experience for High School Students.’

The program introduces high school students from underrepresented communities in Martinez, CA to careers in the built environment. The program begins during the academic year as professionals visit the high schools to introduce students to various fields, including landscape architecture, planning, engineering, architecture, marketing and finance. Over the summer, the students spend 2 weeks at UC-Berkeley getting a taste of each career path and focusing with some intensity on the field of their choice.  The ultimate program goal is to provide role models to socio-economically disadvantaged youth and increase the numbers entering UC-Berkeley in design professions.

ASLA recognizes the lack of diversity prevalent in our profession, particularly concerning African-American and Latino practitioners. To better understand why this persists and how the tide might be turned, ASLA will convene a Diversity Summit July 12–14, 2013, in Alexandria, Virginia.
