Professional Study Tour to the Netherlands

Coastal Planning, Floods, and Hard and Soft Approaches to Hazard Mitigation

The American Planning Association is organizing a 5-day study tour for professionals interested in urban and rural water management and coastal planning. The tour will explore Holland’s urban, coastal, and inland infrastructure. You can learn how those approaches apply to U.S. coastal regions—and to your community.

See Rotterdam’s famous sea gates as well as numerous Delta Works projects designed to protect the Dutch coast against flooding. Visit Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer and IJburg neighborhoods plus the Eastern Docklands project. Share ideas with design professionals while you learn about:

  • incorporating water management into urban, inland, and coastal planning
  • adopting a multiple-defense approach to adaptation and hazard mitigation
  • projecting the benefits and costs of hard and soft infrastructure
  • living with water, deriving value from water, and protecting against water

As an added feature, you’ll see Renee Jones-Bos, the Netherlands’ former ambassador to the United States, present the 2013L’Enfant Lecture, cosponsored by the National Building Museum.
