The Executive Committee of the NCC volunteers spend their time working on behalf of our members, often behind the scenes with little fanfare. We spend our time organizing lectures and events, ensuring fiscal health and advocating for landscape architects locally and at the State level. Our key goals are to advance landscape architecture through advocacy, communication, education, and fellowship. In our busy professional lives it's nice to take time out to connect with colleagues by volunteering or attending events.

We are sometimes asked about the value of membership , what do we really get for our dues? It's important to remember that ASLA is the only professional organization effectively representing landscape architects with policy makers and the public. There are a lot of online tools on the national website you can use to advance your practice, whether as an individual or as a firm. Below are a few activities that your national and local dues support.

The "Members Only" benefits online include:

  • Advocacy tools and opportunities , ASLA promotes issues that are important to landscape architects with national and local policymakers
    • Your Chapter's President-Elect went to Washington DC last year and met with Zoe Lofgren and Nancy Pelosi's staff in their offices to advocate for the reauthorization and full funding for Active Transportation and Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) projects. Members of our Executive Committee are attending again this year in May. President Obama recently committed to full funding for the LWCF.
    • A member of our Advocacy Committee attended a national advocacy meeting in Florida in January to learn about how to effectively advocate for our profession.
    • The California Council of ASLA has a lobbyist who tracks key legislation of interest. Once the Chapter is alerted with a call to action we actively participate in crafting new laws and offering our expertise to elected officials. Last year we helped rewrite sections of California's revised irrigation ordinance.
